Addiction & Bondage
The Human Struggle
The substance or behavior started as relief — and became a cage. What began as a choice now feels like a compulsion. Quitting has been tried and failed. Shame spirals back into the very thing that causes shame. The secret is exhausting to keep.
The Root Issue
Addiction is a worship disorder. People run to created things to find what only God can provide: comfort, escape, numbness, peace, pleasure, control. The idol cannot deliver — but the craving returns anyway. This is the nature of false worship: it promises everything and provides nothing lasting.
What Scripture Says
Romans 6 declares that sin shall no longer be your master. The same power that raised Christ from the dead is available to break every chain. God does not merely manage bondage — He dismantles it. But freedom requires surrender, honesty, and community.
"So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed."
John 8:36
"For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace."
Romans 6:14
"No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear."
1 Corinthians 10:13
"Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed."
James 5:16
"It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery."
Galatians 5:1
Lies We Believe & Truth That Sets Free
Lies We Believe
- I can stop whenever I want to — I just need the right moment.
- This is the only thing that makes the pain bearable.
- I've tried too many times. It's who I am now.
- I'm too far gone for God to help.
- No one can know about this.
Truth That Sets Free
Jesus does not merely forgive bondage. He breaks chains. But freedom is not passive — it is pursued through surrender, honesty, radical removal of access, community, and daily dependence on the Spirit rather than on the substance.
Grace-Filled Next Steps
Confess to God and to at least one safe person — break the power of secrecy.
Remove access to the substance or behavior immediately and completely.
Find a biblically-grounded recovery community (Celebrate Recovery, etc.).
Replace what the addiction provides with what only God can truly give.
Accept that recovery is a journey, and relapse is not the end of the story.
Pursue pastoral and, when appropriate, medical support — both are tools of God's grace.
Biblical Practices
Daily surrender prayer — give the craving to God before it builds
Memorize Romans 6:14 and speak it when temptation rises
Share honestly with your accountability partner at every weak moment
Replace the ritual of the addiction with a spiritual ritual
Serve in ministry — purpose displaces compulsion
Prayer
Warning & Hope
Warning if Ignored
Addiction escalates. The tolerance grows, the dose increases, and the destruction widens — relationships, finances, health, and the soul. There is a point where the body and brain bear lasting damage. Early intervention is always better. Secrecy is the fuel that keeps addiction burning.
Hope in Christ
The man in Mark 5 was so bound that chains could not hold him — and Jesus set him completely free, in his right mind, clothed, and telling everyone what God had done. That is not an ancient story. That is your invitation. The chain-breaker is standing before you.
